
Riaz Ahmed Mangrio, PhD
Associate Professor / Incharge Chairperson

Dr. Riaz Ahmed Mangrio earned his PhD in Linguistics from Newcastle University in 2012. Initially, he worked as Subject Specialist in Sindh Government, then as an Assistant Professor in the University of Gujrat for over seven years and joined SMIU as Associate Professor in February 2020. Dr. Mangrio has got 22 research papers published in national and international journals besides a book published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. He has also launched two research journals Pakistan Journal of Languages and Translation Studies (2013) and Hayatian Journal of Linguistics and Literature (2017) and has been their Editor. He has also supervised Eighteen MPhil and two PhD theses and participated in various national and international conferences and presented research papers.
Abdul Malik Abbasi, PhD
Associate Professor

Dr. Abdul Malik Abbasi is a Ph.D. in Linguistics with a specialization in Experimental Phonetics. Abbasi’ s research relates to Human Speech-spoken language with a focus on the variability of speech forms, the mechanisms humans use to process speech and acquire spoken language systems utilizing speech recognition and machine learning modeling based on the phonetics-phonology interface, speech perception & production, and corpus-based approaches. Dr. Abdul Malik conducted research on intonational phonology, morphology and the lexical-stress interface; designed speech production experiments; analyzed large datasets using computational methods; contributed to technical writing and scientific presentations. Dr. Abbasi earned his doctorate and MS in Applied Linguistics from the University of Management and Technology, Lahore. He did Masters in English Literature and Bachelors in General subjects. Dr. Malik was awarded MS leading to Ph.D. & International Research Support Initiative Program during Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA, Fellowships Sponsored by the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan. He is a well-published author with five research books and contributed 55 research papers to national and international journals indexed in Web of Sciences and Scopus etc. Dr. Abbasi is an Approved HEC PhD Supervisor and won HEC Linguistic Projects-2022-23 & 25-26; the first project was successfully executed as a Principal Investigator
Wafa Mansoor Buriro, MS
Assistant Professor

Mr. Wafa Mansoor Buriro is the Coordinator at the Department of English. He has over a decade of experience teaching at the higher education level.
Mr. Buriro completed his MS in Applied Linguistics from NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, in 2019, securing the highest score in his batch. He previously earned his BS in Applied Linguistics from the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, in 2013, graduating with first position and receiving a silver medal. With extensive academic contributions, he has authored and co-authored 14 research papers, published in national and international research journals, and has translated four books, two in Sindhi, one each in Urdu and English. His research interests include language teaching, sociolinguistics, language ecology, and language endangerment. He is currently working on his doctoral dissertation.
He also worked as a Co-Principal Investigator during 2022-2024 on a project funded by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan under National Research Program for Universities (NRPU).
Mr. Buriro is actively engaged in professional development and international academic collaborations. He is a Global Online Course (GOC) alumnus and successfully completed the "Integrating Critical Thinking into the Exploration of Culture in an EFL Setting" course from World Learning under the OPEN program for Pakistan. The program was sponsored by the Regional English Language Office (RELO) at the U.S. Embassy, Islamabad. In addition, Mr. Buriro was a participant in the 2nd OPEN Alumni Conference in Haripur and has served as a MOOC Ambassador, promoting online learning opportunities and supporting educators in integrating digital learning tools into their teaching practices.
Hatesh Kumar, MS
Lecturer

Mr. Hatesh is an accomplished Applied Linguist with over 14 years of teaching experience. He holds an MS in Applied Linguistics from NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi (2015) and a BS in English (Linguistics) from the University of Karachi (2010). He further enhanced his expertise through The Research Fellowship Program at the University of North Texas, USA.
Mr. Hatesh has served as a Lecturer in English at the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) for more than four years. He has also contributed as a visiting faculty member at Usman Institute of Technology (UIT) and NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi.
Actively engaged in the academic community, he is a member of the Board of Studies, Department of English, and a member of the Board of Faculty, Faculty of Languages and Culture Studies. He has participated in numerous National and International Conferences and Seminars and has conducted various workshops. He has four research papers to his credit. He supervises BS and MS candidates in their research theses. Furthermore, he has completed multiple online courses to stay current in his field. His primary area of interest lies in Applied Linguistics.
Syeda Kiran Shirazi, MS
Lecturer

Ms. Shirazi is a seasoned educator and researcher with a strong passion for language and learning. Holding a Master's degree in English Literature from the University of Sindh (2008) and a Master's degree in English Linguistics from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (2017), she has established herself as a dedicated professional in the field.
With nearly fifteen years of teaching experience at both college and university levels, Ms. Shirazi has developed a unique understanding of the complexities of language acquisition and instruction. Her research and conference papers have been published nationally and internationally, showcasing her expertise in L2 motivation, blended learning, and mother tongue-based multi-lingual education.
Committed to staying abreast of the latest developments in online teaching, Ms. Shirazi completed the Global Online Course (GOC) "Fundamentals of Online Teaching" in 2021, a collaborative program between RELO Pakistan and Michigan State University, USA.Currently enrolled in the PhD program at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Ms. Shirazi continues to pursue her research interests with dedication and enthusiasm.
Bakhtawer Daudpota, MS
Lecturer

With over a decade of experience in academia, Ms. Bakhtawer Daudpota is a dedicated English language lecturer with a specialization in English linguistics. She holds an MS in English Linguistics from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, and has taught at various private and public sector universities. Her expertise lies in enhancing students’ linguistic proficiency and communication skills through a dynamic and research-driven approach to language teaching.
In addition to her academic qualifications, Ms. Daudpota has completed the Global Online Course: Integrating Critical Thinking Skills into the Exploration of Culture, sponsored by the Regional English Language Office. This experience has further enriched her ability to foster analytical thinking and cross-cultural understanding in her students, contributing to a well-rounded and engaging learning environment.
