Kabir Ghoto, PhD
Assistant Professor

Dr. Kabir Ghoto earned his PhD degree in Environmental Science from Xiamen University, China and he is working as Assistant Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences. His research involves nature and environment and analyses the impacts of human intervention on ecosystems. To elucidate the physiological and biochemical responses of plants to environmental stressors, with particular emphasis on heavy metal toxicity, nanoparticle toxicity, zinc toxicity, and the ameliorative roles of signaling molecules like hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and investigates the biological responses of concerned plant species to above stress. Dr Ghoto’s research extends to the effects of engineered nanoparticles, such as zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silicon dioxide (SiO2), on plant growth and physiological responses that influence root exudates and plant stress tolerance is systematically assessed, contributing to the understanding of nanoparticle-mediated stress responses in plants. Furthermore, the role of hydrogen sulfide in root development and growth of mangrove species is studied, with a particular focus on its potential as a signaling molecule that could mitigate environmental stressors. Profile root exudates from Avicennia marina seedlings under varying salinity conditions and their interaction with trace metals, aiming to uncover the underlying mechanisms of metal stress and rhizosphere chemistry. Besides this, Dr Ghoto evaluates the impacts of nitric-rich acid rain (N-SiAR) on Arabidopsis thaliana plants. Additionally, the role of nitric oxide (NO) in modulating salt tolerance in salt-tolerant mangrove species, particularly Avicennia marina, is explored to understand its potential in enhancing plant resilience to saline environments. This multidisciplinary research integrates environmental impact assessments, plant physiology, and hydroponic cultivation techniques, while incorporating advanced methodologies in oxidative stress measurement, metabolic profiling, and rhizosphere chemistry. Through these investigations, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of plant stress physiology, pollutant dynamics, and the potential use of signaling molecules to mitigate environmental stress in plants. Dr. Ghoto’s research focuses on the ecological impact of invasive plant species, such as Spartina alterniflora, and their influence on soil methane and carbon dioxide fluxes within mangrove ecosystems. The study employs advanced analytical techniques, including excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectrometry. Dr. Ghoto’s new research includes statistical tools, hybrid modeling and advanced data analytics, and are employed to analyze and model complex environmental datasets. This research also contributes to the development of predictive models for air quality monitoring, with applications to the study of the impact of COVID-19 on environmental pollution levels.
