Education City has its first university inauguration
Sindh Madressat-ul-Islam University (SMIU) has opened one of its departments – Department of Environmental Sciences – in the Education City located in Malir.
SMIU has thus distinguished itself as the first public university to have established its campus in the new Education City.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony at the Malir Campus, Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah said that the SMIU has achieved a milestone having its first campus in the Education City:
“Sindh government will soon complete the required infrastructure in the entire area,” he assured. “It is a right approach to establish an Environment Science Department in this area. The students and teachers will have an ideal situation to practically observe the changing environmental conditions,” Shah maintained. He said that the Education City project was one of the best
projects of the government of Sindh. He said that it was not an easy task to establish the campus within limited resources but, he added, the SMIU’s Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh has worked hard to make one of the oldest dreams to come true.
Sharing the details of the project, SMIU Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh said that there was a solid reason to shift SMIU’s department to its new campus: “We want to give an opportunity and ideal situation to our students and teachers to see how our environment is changing,” he added. “We want to establish an environment friendly campus before we move more departments here.” He said that all the students of SMIU will plant trees and look after them as their own property.
According to the VC a new road will be constructed to directly connect the SMIU campus with the Super Highway: “It will facilitate students and teachers to easily move to the city.” Predicting that the situation around the Education City would be different after a decade he stated: “We have started our journey today. SMIU is alma mater of Quaid-e-Azam,” Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh pointed out. “The building in the city campus is of great importance and of national significance.”
Maintaining that SMIU had produced a large number of prominent figures of the country, the VC said SMIU would continue to serve the nation. Shah was briefed about the master plan of the SMIU Malir Campus during his tour of the Department of Environmental Sciences. He was told that new academic blocks, hostels for girls and boys, residential blocks for the staff, sports complex and other infrastructure are under construction. Teachers, students of SMIU, officials and local residents also attended the inaugural ceremony. It is pertinent to mention here that 9,000 acres of land has been allocated to some 21 universities in the Education City.
