
Faiz Mela
The Literary Society of SMIU paid tribute to one of Pakistan’s greatest poets, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, by organizing “Faiz Mela” on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at the Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto Auditorium of the university.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, in his speech, expressed his deep love for literature and encouraged students to embrace Faiz’s ideals of enlightenment and romance, which he believes will remain timeless. He shared a personal anecdote, revealing that his father, Taj Sahrai, was honored with the title “Sahrai” by Faiz Ahmed Faiz himself. This connection added a heartfelt touch to the event, emphasizing Faiz’s enduring influence. Dr. Sahrai also commended the Literary Society of SMIU and acknowledged Mr. Wafa Mansoor Buriro, Assistant Professor and Patron of the Literary Society, for supporting students in organizing the successful program.
Noted educationist and intellectual Professor K.S. Nagpal delivered a profound reflection on Faiz’s life, poetry, and philosophy, highlighting how Faiz’s words continue to inspire and resonate deeply. Renowned poets Mr. Abdul Rehman Momin and Mr. Anwar Shaoor graced the stage, presenting some of their finest works. The highlight of the event was a dynamic shair-o-shayari exchange between the two poets, captivating the audience with their wit and eloquence.
The mushaira was a celebration of emerging poetic voices, featuring seven poets, moderated by a talented young student of SMIU. Students also presented theatrical performances, a documentary, and musical renditions of Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poetry, making the event a memorable tribute to the legendary poet.
