Pink Ribbon Day ‘Disseminate breast cancer information to mothers, aunts, maids’
Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) on Thursday celebrated the ‘Pink Ribbon Day’ with the girls students of the SMI university and SMI Model School.
Speaking at the occasion as the Chief Guest Mehnaz Rehman, the resident director Aurat Foundation, said that it was the prime responsibility of the educated and young girls to disseminate the information about breast cancer with other women.
“We were not allowed to demand even for a separate toilet [for women] in offices some 49 years ago. People laughed at us if we talked about our real issues,” Rehman shared. “Today, the young girls speak and discuss their issues, including the breast cancer.”
Speaking to over 300 girls students at the Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto Auditorium, Rehman urged them to spread the message about breast cancer amongst the women above 40 years. She said that women in rural areas were not even aware about this disease. “We live in era of science and technology and it’s our responsibility to aware women about their issues and diseases.”
She advised married and women above 40 years to go to clinics for checkups and mammogram. She said that breast feeding also reduces chances of breast cancer.
Appreciating SMIU’s efforts to annually arrange awareness drive about the breast cancer in the university premises, Rehman said that that type of campaigns help organizations to properly deliver message to masses.
“It’s our responsibility as an educated woman to let our women know about the disease,” urged Shaista Muhammad Ali, the honorary advisor on cultural and gender affairs. She advised students to share the information with their mothers, aunts, older sisters and maids. “We [as women] have to take care of our own health.”
Shaista said that Pakistan was already facing burden of cancer patients. She said that with complete, proper and timely information majority of women can avoid the disease at very early stage.
The students with poetry and theater and pink dress competition tried to deliver the message about the disease and the rights of women.
